Funded Faculty Salary Support

The Funded Faculty Salary Support program provides departments with up to $70,000 per year, per faculty recruit, for up to two years. This program is designed to aid in the recruitment and retention of highly productive research faculty in targeted areas.

Qualifications and guidelines

To be eligible for this program, the following requirements must be met:

  • Request must be made prior to the faculty member's hire
  • Candidate must have significant extramural research funding that provides full indirect costs (currently 52.5%)
  • Candidate must have at least 50% effort devoted to research

Preference will be given to investigators with significant accomplishments and expertise in one or more of the following areas which have been targeted for research development at the institution:

  • Cancer
  • Neuroscience
  • Cardiovascular
  • Obesity/diabetes
  • Population science (highest priority given to those whose research focuses on current UMMC population research such as cardiovascular, women's health, obesity, etc.)

Once approved for support, a department must submit a progress report to University Research no later than month 10 of the faculty member's first year of support detailing his/her research accomplishments since being accepted into the program and justifying salary support for the upcoming year. Requests will be reviewed by the Executive Director of Research and a determination as to year 2 funding will be returned to the department. If, at any time, it is determined a faculty member no longer meets the program qualifications or an annual report is not received in a timely manner, funding will be revoked.

Applications should be emailed to Leslie Musshafen.
