Hall wins 2024 SEC Faculty Award
Dr. Michael Hall, a distinguished professor of medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), has been honored with the 2024 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Achievement Award for the University of Mississippi. In addition to his role as professor, Hall serves as chair of the Department of Medicine and holds the Patrick H. Lehan Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine.
Since 2012, the SEC has presented this award annually to one faculty member from each of its 14 member institutions. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and service, and includes a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC.
Dr. Hall, who completed both his medical degree and internal medicine residency at UMMC, also has faculty appointments in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and the Department of Radiology. His expertise spans hypertension, heart failure, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and obesity-related cardiovascular and renal diseases.
UM Chancellor Glenn Boyce praised Dr. Hall, stating, "Dr. Hall’s achievements exemplify the University of Mississippi’s dedication to advancing health care and improving lives. His research significantly contributes to our Medical Center’s legacy of excellence, and his commitment to teaching and mentoring is unparalleled. We congratulate Dr. Hall on this well-deserved recognition and appreciate his extraordinary leadership."
Dr. Hall expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career: “Teaching and mentoring students, residents, fellows, and early career faculty have been incredibly rewarding aspects of my academic career. I am deeply thankful to my research team, colleagues, and mentors for their immense support and contributions to our institution and the health of Mississippians.”
In addition to his faculty role, Dr. Hall has held several significant leadership positions, including director of clinical and population studies at the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research, associate program director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program, and cardiac imaging director for the Cardiovascular Service Line.
A fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association’s Council on Hypertension, Dr. Hall has authored over 150 research manuscripts and numerous book chapters. He co-authored the widely-used Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology with his father, Dr. John Hall, the Arthur C. Guyton Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at UMMC. Dr. John Hall was named the SEC’s Professor of the Year in 2014.
Dr. Hall’s research achievements have earned him several accolades, including the 2023 Platinum Award for Research for securing over $5 million in extramural funding, the 2019 Gold Award for Research for over $1 million in extramural funding, and the 2018 Silver Award for Research. He also received the 2018 Department of Medicine Exemplary Research Award and the 2015 Translational Research Award.
As an educator, Dr. Hall has mentored numerous fellows, residents, and students. He received the 2023 Trailblazer Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education at UMMC and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society in 2021, recognizing his educational achievements, teaching excellence, and commitment to professionalism and service.
