Molecular and Genomics Core

About us

The UMMC Molecular and Genomics Core is committed to providing expertise in molecular, cell biology, and genetic technologies to researchers at UMMC and within the region.

The core does this by promoting and assisting faculty and students with research in molecular genetics; serving as a nucleus to develop research and educational programs aimed at increasing the competitiveness of genomic research at UMMC; and offering basic research and clinical investigators high quality, state-of-the-art services in a timely fashion.

The Molecular and Genomics Core is committed to:
  • Helping investigators initiate and coordinate genetic-based research initiatives across all university departments and centers.
  • Providing timely, high quality data generation and analysis at a competitive cost.
  • Educating and training faculty and students in genetic technologies.

Equipment

The Molecular and Genomics Facility core occupies approximately 1,100 square feet of laboratory space and is well-equipped to perform genetic and genomic analysis on human and several model organisms, including rat and mouse. The core facility is experienced in all aspects of molecular biology, quantitative RNA analysis and genotyping.
  • General sample preparation and biological storage: Table-top Microfuge (Eppendorf 1524), Temperature Controlled Bench-top Centrifuge (Eppendorf 5810R), Heated Water Baths, Sonicator, Homogenizer, BioRad Chemidoc XRS System, BioTek Flx800 microplate fluorescence reader, Hybrid Maxi-14 hybridization oven, and -80° C Freezer, -20° C Freezer, refrigerators
  • DNA and RNA measurement and quality control: Bio-Rad Experion System, Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100, NanoDrop ND-1000A UV-Vis Spectrophotometer
  • PCR: Two gradient thermocyclers (Bio-Rad myIQ)
