Burn Care for Children

Total burn care from pediatric specialists

At the UMMC Mississippi Burn Center, children receive advanced burn care from on-site pediatric specialists in every medical discipline needed for complete care. During treatment, our burn specialists will consult with any other pediatric specialists who may be needed to give children the specific care they need for their overall health. If a child has asthma, for example, the burn team can bring in a pediatric pulmonologist or allergist to help manage that condition alongside treatment for the burns.

The burn unit is designed so that all services are offered in a single, protected unit where children in every phase of recovery can receive the care they need. All beds on the unit are ICU-capable for children who need critical care. The unit’s rehabilitation gym is where children undergoing physical and occupational therapy can begin working to regain strength and mobility. In the unit’s dedicated debridement room, kids who need advanced wound care to prevent infection can be treated, reducing the need for trips to the OR.

Additionally, the unit’s location within Batson Tower makes all the resources of Mississippi’s only children’s hospital readily available.

Care that cherishes the child

The UMMC Mississippi Burn Center is capable of caring for everyone with burns, from more complex cases to less severe burns. This includes care for a child’s emotional and developmental well-being. As part of that, our child life specialists are on hand to help kids cope with being in the hospital.

We understand that family support is vital for a child's recovery. The burn unit has visiting hours and guidelines that allow kids the rest they need while still benefiting from the presence of loved ones. Out-of-town family members can stay in touch via telehealth monitors that are available in every room.

Kids may benefit from participating in the Mississippi Burn Camp, a free camp for young burn survivors ages 6-17 held by the Mississippi Burn Camp Foundation. Learn about the camp (external site and opens in a new page).

Outpatient burn care for ongoing recovery

Specialized care from the Burn Center continues after children are discharged from the hospital. Outpatient services include follow-up visits with a burn specialist at Sanderson Tower.

Parents can contact the Burn Center for additional care after discharge. Children may benefit from more pain management or physical therapy to continue recovery.

Outpatient clinics are held in Sanderson Tower, Floor B, Pod A, on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings.
