About the Burn Center

Dedicated Burn Unit
The UMMC Mississippi Burn Center, a dedicated burn unit located on the first floor of Batson Tower, is a 9,000 square-foot space providing a specialized environment for the care of both adult and pediatric burn patients. Our on-site staff includes all the adult and pediatric specialties needed for complete burn care.
The Burn Unit combines acute treatment and rehabilitation services under one roof. This collaborative, multidisciplinary approach ensures that burn patients benefit from both immediate critical care and long-term rehabilitation services essential for recovery.
Because burn patients are at risk for infection, admission to the Burn Center allows patients to receive complex, focused care in a protected environment. The unit includes:
- Eight patient rooms, each fully equipped to provide medical-surgical step down or ICU-level care
- A dedicated room for wound debridement
- A rehabilitation gym for physical and occupational therapy
- Telehealth-enabled monitors in each patient room
If surgery is needed, OR suites located in the same tower offer easy access to minimize transport time and improve continuity of care.
Telehealth monitoring
All eight rooms in the UMMC Mississippi Burn Center are equipped with telehealth-enabled monitors, providing real-time remote access for physicians and specialists. This technology allows care teams to assess and respond to patient needs immediately, even when they are not physically present on the unit. Additionally, a secure video link can be shared with family members, enabling them to virtually participate in care discussions and family meetings, which is especially helpful when travel or in-person visits are limited.
- Multidisciplinary access: Telehealth allows burn surgeons, intensivists and other specialists to consult virtually and collaborate on care in real time.
- Timely intervention: Remote access to the patient environment means urgent assessments and orders can happen without delay.
- Family-centered care: Virtual family participation helps ensure loved ones are informed, engaged and able to advocate for their family member, even from afar.
Support for visitors and family members
Visitation hours on the Burn Unit follow UMMC’s critical care visitation policies. Rooms are furnished with comfortable recliners in each room. Additionally, out-of-town family members can stay in touch with patients using in-room telehealth technology.
