Education and Research

As part of an academic medical center, the UMMC Mississippi Burn Center is involved in teaching future health care providers and contributing to important research related to burn care.

Medical students from M2, M3, and M4 years are afforded opportunities to observe patients in outpatient and inpatient as well as intraoperative settings. Residents in surgery, anesthesia, pediatrics, emergency medicine as well as PICU fellows and SICU fellows are involved in the care of our patients in various areas of the hospital. Additionally, nursing students, physical and occupational therapy students and surgical technology students are all introduced to the care of burn patients.

Current research at the Burn Center is focused on several quality improvement projects, and the use of fresh frozen plasma for the care of patients with total body surface area (TBSA) burns greater than 25%.

At UMMC, commitment to education and research is embedded into our culture. We educate providers about all types of burn care throughout the system.
