Burn Care for Adults

Total burn care under one roof

At the UMMC Mississippi Burn Center, patients receive advanced burn care from on-site specialists in every medical discipline needed for complete burn care. In addition to specialists in critical care, anesthesiology and plastic surgery, burn specialists consult with many other specialists who may be needed to give patients the specific care they require for their overall health. If a patient has diabetes, for example, the burn team can bring in an endocrinologist to help manage that condition alongside treatment for the burns.

The burn unit is designed so that all services are offered in a single, protected unit where patients in every phase of recovery can receive the care they need. All beds on the unit are ICU-capable for patients who need critical care. The unit’s rehabilitation gym is where patients undergoing physical and occupational therapy can begin working to regain strength and mobility. In the unit’s dedicated debridement room, patients who need advanced wound care to prevent infection can be treated, reducing the need for trips to the OR.

Care for the whole person

The UMMC Mississippi Burn Center is capable of caring for everyone with burns, from more complex cases to less severe burns. This includes care for the whole person. As part of that, we provide psychiatric services, dedicated case management and assistance with workers’ compensation.

We understand that family support is vital for a patient’s recovery. The burn unit has visiting hours and guidelines that allow patients the rest they need and family companionship. Out-of-town family members can stay in touch via telehealth monitors that are available in every room.

Outpatient burn care for ongoing recovery

Specialized care from the Burn Center continues after patients are discharged from the hospital. Outpatient services include follow-up visits with a burn specialist at the UMMC Pavilion. Patients who need help with pain management after discharge may see our burn specialist for ongoing care. Additionally, patients can self-refer to physical therapy and occupational therapy to improve range of motion and other mobility issues that may persist after a burn has healed.

Outpatient clinic visits are held in the UMMC Pavilion, Suite H, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
