Education and Research Overview
Under the auspices of the Hand Center, the UMMC hand surgery fellowship prepares physicians for hand surgery capable of confidence in any practice model. The program provides a comprehensive exposure and training experience in hand surgery in collaboration with both the Division of Plastic Surgery and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UMMC.
With support and direction from both surgical disciplines, the program provides learners with a full spectrum of adult and pediatric cases. From acute trauma to joint arthroplasty or replacement, to peripheral nerve problems, our trainees gain hands-on experience in a patient-centered environment.
UMMC offers a Joint Plastic Surgery/Hand Surgery 5+1 program, an accelerated pathway leading to ABPS certification in both plastic surgery and hand surgery. The pathway includes all requirements for the plastic surgery residency training and hand surgery fellowship. This accelerated process allows qualified individuals to pursue hand surgery specialization with a 5+1 schedule. Candidates must be identified before completion of the PGY-4 year in plastic surgery.
