Preventive medicine residents gain hands-on experience at EversCare Clinic

Preventive medicine residents at the University of Mississippi Medical Center continue to gain valuable hands-on experience through a rotation with the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities (MEWI) and the EversCare Clinic.
This year’s MEWI residents are Alex Tomar, Indu Anand, Shakir Hossen and Luiz Campedelli. Under the direction of Dr. Gholar, the residents apply their understanding of the social determinants of health to a patient population with complex needs and barriers to care.
During the rotation, residents work with a multidisciplinary team to support care coordination, patient navigation and connection to community resources. They learn more about the roles of social workers and community health liaisons while using motivational interviewing to better understand patients’ perspectives on preventive services.
“The EversCare Clinic model is quite different from their usual medical clinic experience and remains a valuable part of the PGY-2 curriculum,” said Dr. Brian Williams, residency director.
The rotation reflects the broader mission of UMMC’s Preventive Medicine Residency Program, which prepares physicians to promote health, prevent disease, reduce health disparities and improve outcomes for individuals, communities and defined populations across Mississippi.
