EversCare Food Pantry continues to meet critical community need

Food insecurity remains a serious challenge in Mississippi. According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, Mississippi’s food insecurity rate was 19.4% in 2023, compared with 14.3% nationally.

To help address this need, the UMMC EversCare Clinic at the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities (MEWI) operates the EversCare Food Pantry, which provides emergency food assistance to patients, families and community members.

During the first four months of 2026, the EversCare Food Pantry served 1,410 families and 2,342 individuals. Those served included 672 children, 752 adults and 918 seniors. The pantry also supported 61 veterans and 118 multigenerational families.

Through its partnership with the Mississippi Food Network, the pantry distributed 28,681 pounds of food from January through April, helping connect families with nutritious food and critical support during times of need.

The EversCare Food Pantry continues to play a vital role in reducing food insecurity while helping families access healthy, high-quality food options that support long-term well-being throughout Mississippi.
