Inspiring child advocacy through the Marian Wright Edelman Distinguished Lectureship
The Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities is honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson, president and CEO of the Children's Defense Fund, as the keynote speaker for the 2025 Marian Wright Edelman Distinguished Lectureship on Wednesday, October 1.
A prominent advocate for child well-being and racial justice, Dr. Wilson has dedicated his career to building community so that all young people can grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. As the leader of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), he is sharpening the organization's strategy and elevating youth voices to inform critical public policy.
"Dr. Wilson's work embodies the spirit of Marian Wright Edelman and the Children's Defense Fund's mission," says MEWI Executive Director Dr. Victoria Gholar. "His tireless efforts to ensure marginalized children not only survive, but truly thrive, make him the perfect choice to deliver this year's distinguished lecture."
Dr. Juanyce Taylor, Director of the Interdisciplinary Learning Lab at MEWI, echoes this sentiment, "Dr. Wilson's commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders aligns perfectly with our institute's mission. We're honored to host him and learn from his wealth of experience in advancing child well-being and social justice."
The Marian Wright Edelman Distinguished Lectureship Series was launched in 2014 as a collaboration between UMMC's Office of Population Health and MEWI. Named after the founder and president emerita of the Children's Defense Fund, the series features renowned experts who shed light on cutting-edge research, policy, and advocacy related to child health and disparities.
"This lectureship provides a vital platform to elevate the issues facing children, particularly in underserved communities," continues Gholar. "We are thrilled to have Dr. Wilson share his insights and inspire our community to join in the fight for child well-being and social justice."
With a background in philanthropy, faith, and community organizing, Dr. Wilson is uniquely qualified to deliver this year's keynote address. His public ministry has included serving on the boards of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Duke University's Divinity School, and the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, among other prominent institutions.
The 2025 Marian Wright Edelman Distinguished Lectureship will take place on Wednesday, October 1. We invite you to join us as we welcome Dr. Wilson and learn how we can work together to create a brighter future for all children.
