Addressing the HIV epidemic through research, education, and advocacy

At MEWI, the fight against HIV/AIDS is central to our mission of advancing health equity. Through the Center for HIV/AIDS Research, Education, and Policy (C-HAREP), we are tackling the HIV epidemic with a comprehensive strategy rooted in research, community engagement, and policy change.

C-HAREP’s work examines the social, economic, and systemic barriers that drive disparities in HIV outcomes, particularly in underserved communities. These insights fuel interventions that are not only effective but also deeply grounded in the lived experiences of those most affected.

This commitment was on full display during a recent event this May, hosted in partnership with the John D. Bower School of Population Health. As part of the Enhancing STI and Sexual Health Clinic Infrastructure Initiative, C-HAREP convened a focus group and educational workshop with Jackson State University students. About 15 participants shared candid insights into the challenges surrounding STI testing and care in Hinds County. Their feedback will help shape strategies to improve access and outcomes in our local health systems.

“Our work is rooted in the belief that the people most impacted by health disparities are also the ones best positioned to guide the solutions,” said Dr. Mauda Monger, Principal Investigator for C-HAREP. “We’re not just collecting data—we’re listening, we’re learning, and we’re building trust.”

C-HAREP continues to lead efforts that blend research, education, and advocacy to reduce stigma, inform policy, and empower communities. As part of MEWI, its work is helping to build a healthier, more equitable Mississippi—one conversation, one partnership, and one policy at a time.
