EversCare Food Pantry: an urgent call to support families facing food insecurity

The EversCare Food Pantry continues to serve as a critical lifeline for patients and families who are struggling with food insecurity. This fall has brought an especially challenging period. MEWI’s pantry inventory is low, and as quickly as shelves are restocked, food is depleted – often within days.

Several factors are driving this crisis. Many families are losing access to assistance programs such as SNAP and WIC at the same time that prices for basic foods continue to rise. As a result, the demand for food assistance is increasing sharply not only at MEWI, but also across our partner organizations that are experiencing similar shortages.

The impact is already visible. In October, the pantry was able to distribute only 70 bags of groceries, far fewer than the 300 bags we are used to preparing for Jackson families facing food insecurity. At the same time, more clients are seeking care in the clinic, and the number of households in need of food support continues to grow. The pantry’s resources are stretched thinner than ever.

During this period of heightened need, community support is essential. Donations of nonperishable food items are deeply appreciated. Items that are especially helpful include:

  • Canned vegetables and fruits

  • Canned meats and soups

  • Rice, pasta, and beans

  • Peanut butter

  • Tomato sauce and other shelf-stable staples

Food donations may be dropped off at:

Those who wish to help in additional ways may also volunteer or make a monetary gift. Both allow MEWI to stretch resources further and continue providing essential support to families who rely on the pantry.
