A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either through a blockage, which is an ischemic stroke, or sudden bleeding, called a hemorrhagic stroke. A stroke is a medical emergency. As blood flow stops, the area in the brain affected by the stroke loses oxygen and brain cells begin to die. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States. It can even result in death.
Getting treatment right away is critical. That’s why it’s important to recognize symptoms of a stroke, and to know what to do if they occur.
