A tribute to our volunteers
A Tribute to Our Volunteers
In April, during National Volunteer Month, the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities (MEWI) celebrated the remarkable contributions of our dedicated volunteers. Their unwavering commitment and hard work are vital to our mission of eliminating health disparities and enhancing community well-being.
Our volunteers are integral to every aspect of MEWI's outreach and research initiatives. For instance, at the EversCare Food Pantry last year, our volunteers helped distribute over 70,000 pounds of food to nearly 7,000 individuals. Their involvement is crucial in empowering and informing our communities through various educational programs.
Each month we are supported by an exceptional group of volunteers. Volunteers come from the UMMC School of Nursing, the Mississippi Department of Archives & History, Penske, the UMMC Center for Children with Medical Complexity, and the list goes on and on. Their efforts have been instrumental in maintaining the momentum of our projects, combining passion with professionalism.
A special mention goes to Mr. Charles “Smarty Pants” King, whose dedication has not only earned our admiration but also recognition from the Mississippi House of Representatives. His engaging storytelling and educational outreach continue to inspire and impact many lives, embodying the true spirit of volunteerism.
As we move forward, MEWI invites everyone in our community to join our efforts. Whether you can spare a few hours a month or commit more regularly, your time and skills can significantly advance our cause. Addressing the social determinants of health and striving for health equity is a continuous effort, and every small action contributes to a greater goal.
We extend our deepest thanks to all our volunteers for their dedication and enthusiasm. Your contributions make a real difference, and we are immensely grateful for every effort that helps propel our mission forward. Interested in making an impact with us? Together, inspired by Myrlie Evers-Williams' legacy and fueled by our passionate volunteers, we continue to make a significant impact on the health and lives of our community members.
