EversCare Food Pantry: addressing food insecurity in Mississippi

Mississippi has the highest rate of food insecurity in the nation, with over 20% of residents struggling to access nutritious food. To address this urgent issue, the UMMC Ambulatory EversCare Clinic at the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities offers an emergency food pantry.

The EversCare Food Pantry has been a lifeline for UMMC patients and the broader community, providing essential food resources to an average of 255 families each month!

Thanks to our partnership with the Mississippi Food Network, the pantry operates efficiently, spending just $25.83 per week (or $103.32 per month) to feed these families—equating to only $0.19 per individual. To date, an incredible 60,016 pounds of food have been distributed!

Through this initiative, the EversCare Food Pantry is playing a critical role in reducing food insecurity while offering healthy, high-quality food options to support the well-being of families across Mississippi.
