SMILE!

SMILE (Enhancing Integrated Dentistry Training and Care for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Mississippi) strengthens dental care for children with developmental disabilities across Mississippi by equipping future dentists with practical, evidence-based behavioral strategies. In partnership with UMMC's School of Dentistry, the program incorporates Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) training – an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach designed to support positive, developmentally appropriate interactions between adults and children. CARE training provides dentists and dental trainees with concrete skills to promote cooperation, reduce stress and foster trust during dental visits.

The initiative promotes participant-focused dental care by preparing the emerging dental workforce to recognize and respond to the behavioral and emotional needs of children with developmental disabilities. Through training, coaching and hands-on practice, SMILE increases the capacity for dental providers to deliver patient-centered care that supports both oral health and emotional well-being.

Services available to dental trainees and professionals include:

  • CARE training workshops that teach trauma-informed, positive behavior management strategies tailored for pediatric dentistry
  • In vivo learning opportunities that allow dental trainees to practice and receive feedback on effective engagement with children during dental care
  • Ongoing consultation and support to help providers integrate behavioral strategies into daily clinical practice

Dentists and dental trainees in Mississippi who participate in CARE training will gain confidence and skills in caring for children with developmental disabilities, leading to more positive dental experiences for children and families statewide.
