Hereditary Cancer Clinic
Some individuals are born with genetic mutations that significantly increase their risk of developing certain cancers. These inherited mutations can be passed from parents to biological children.
Who should consider genetic counseling for cancer
You or your family members may benefit from genetic counseling if you have:
- A personal history of cancer diagnosed at a young age (e.g., breast or colon cancer in your 50s or younger)
- Multiple family members with a history of cancer, particularly in first- (parent, sibling, child) or second-degree (grandparent, aunt/uncle, niece/nephew) relatives
- Rare cancers, such as ovarian cancer, male breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, or metastatic breast/prostate cancer
- Multiple primary cancer diagnoses in one person (such as multiple types of cancer in yourself or a family member)
- Unusual findings such as a history of numerous polyps, medullary thyroid carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors (such as paragangliomas and pheochromocytomas), or clear cell renal carcinoma
- Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, which is associated with higher risks for certain inherited cancers.
To help individuals and families navigate these concerns, UMMC Genetics and Genomics Services offers comprehensive cancer genetic counseling services, available at our Hereditary Cancer Clinic.
Our dedicated team, including a nurse practitioner and genetic counselors, work with you to assess your personal and family health history. We then discuss inherited cancer risks, review screening and management options, and help you decide whether genetic testing is the right choice for you and your family.
Our team will thoroughly explain your results and connect you with the appropriate specialists for the cancer screenings and care you need. We are here to empower you with knowledge and tools to take control of your health.
