Cardiomyopathy Clinic
The Cardiomyopathy Clinic is dedicated to evaluating, diagnosing and managing inherited cardiomyopathies, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM). These heart muscle disorders can have significant health implications and may affect multiple family members, making genetic insights significant for effective care.
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): HCM is characterized by abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, often leading to symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting or palpitations. It can also increase the risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) and sudden cardiac arrest. Certain management decisions are based on genetic mutations.
- Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): DCM involves an enlarged and weakened heart muscle, impairing the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. Symptoms can include fatigue, swelling, shortness of breath and arrhythmias. Management may involve standard heart failure treatment including medications and devices such as implantable defibrillators or pacemakers.
- Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy (ACM): ACM affects the heart’s electrical system and structure, leading to arrhythmias, dizziness, fainting or even heart failure. It often requires a combination of antiarrhythmic medications, lifestyle modifications, and potentially an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) for prevention of sudden cardiac events. Patients with certain genetic mutations have specific guidelines for ICD placement which are different from the general population.
With genetic testing, our care team can personalize your care and assess any risks for your relatives. During your visit, our genetic counselor will begin with a detailed family history and counsel you about genetic testing.
Following this, our medical doctor/clinical geneticist will conduct a physical examination and provide an in-depth review of your genetics of cardiomyopathy. This will include clinical indicators, potential complications and tailored treatment recommendations.
Our team provides expert guidance to empower you with the knowledge and tools you need to manage your cardiomyopathy and protect your heart health.
