About Batson Children's Hospital

Batson Children’s Hospital is the flagship of Children's of Mississippi, part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). As Mississippi’s only children’s hospital, we care for kids from across the state, offering everything from emergency care to highly specialized heart and cancer care for kids.

Batson Children’s Hospital treats about 150,000 children each year in more than 30 specialty areas, including newborn medicine, pediatric cardiology, neurology, and surgery. It houses the state’s only pediatric intensive care unit and emergency department along with Mississippi's only pediatric treatment programs for cancer, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, congenital heart defects, and more.

Special support for children and families

On our care team are certified Child Life Specialists, specially trained professionals who help children and families cope with stress related to illness, hospitalization, and trauma. They provide age-appropriate help, such as therapeutic play and preparation for procedures, to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain. Your child’s doctors and social workers will talk to you about child life services and how you can receive them.

Additionally, on-site teachers in our School Program help hospitalized children with assignments so they can continue normal, everyday educational activities and continue toward their academic goals.

The Family Advisory Support Team (FAST) is a way for parents and caretakers of Children’s of Mississippi patients to help shape and improve UMMC's pediatric services. FAST members work in partnership with our health care professionals by providing feedback and sharing stories that inform our quality of care improvement initiatives and elevate the overall patient and family experience. For more information, email ChildrensFAST@umc.edu.

On-site pediatricians provide ready care

Hospitalists, pediatricians with specialty training in the care of hospitalized children, manage the treatment of acutely ill patients at Batson Children’s Hospital. These specialists work closely with emergency department physicians, primary care doctors, surgeons and other specialists to provide efficient, quality care from admission to discharge.
