School of Nursing Diversity and Inclusion mission:To promote an environment that embraces and values the racial, ethnic, gender and cultural differences that exist among members of the School of Nursing.
School of Nursing Diversity Statement:The UMMC SON believes in the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for all of our students. We aim to break down barriers that prevent our students from being able to utilize their abilities to their fullest potential. We recognize that with a diverse student body, there is diversity in learning styles; therefore, a variety of teaching styles will be incorporated to maximize the potential of all students. Furthermore, we value and actively seek out the complexities of thought, intellect, resources, and abilities that a diverse student body provides to the overall student learning process."
The purpose of the mentorship program is to provide students from different racial and ethnic backgrounds the opportunity to interact with and be mentored by practicing nurses with similar backgrounds. Participants gain invaluable insight into the nursing profession; receive the guidance and support of a seasoned RN; build the foundation for a lasting professional network; and gain a clearer understanding of academic and career plans.
Throughout the year, scholarship opportunities become available. SON Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in conjunction with the Office of Student Life, disseminates this information to students
