Main ContentSummer Program - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Mississippi School-based Telehealth program?
Through the Mississippi School-based Telehealth program, students can have a video visit with a medical provider during the summer!
When a student needs minor medical or behavioral health care, the parent/guardian will call (601)815-2020 to schedule a visit with a UMMC provider. The parent/guardian will use a computer, tablet or smartphone to let the student and provider see each other, talk and share information.
The provider will recommend treatment or make a referral during the video visit. Each video visit will require the consent of a parent or guardian and will include the parent/guardian, the student and the UMMC provider. This program is available to Mississippi public school students through a grant from the Mississippi Department of Education.
Can students have telehealth visits without a parent or guardian?
No. A parent/guardian must give consent for the video visit and be present during the visit.
When are summer services available?
Starting June 1st, 2023, minor medical care will be available 7 days a week from 6 am to 6 pm and behavioral health will be available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm.
How do I schedule a telehealth visit?
Parents/guardians should call (601) 815-2020 to schedule a minor medical care or behavioral health visit.
What conditions can be treated with telehealth?
Telehealth is a good choice for treating minor medical issues including asthma and allergies, skin irritations, colds and flu, head lice, sore throat, pinkeye, headaches, rashes, and fever.
What behavioral health services are available?
NOTE: If your child is at risk of harming themselves or others, please call 911 or 988 for the National Suicide and Crisis Hotline.
We provide behavioral health care from experienced specialists in non-crisis situations for anxiety, depression, behavioral difficulties, coping skills, trouble expressing feelings and more.
Can uninsured students participate in this program?
Yes, any Mississippi public school student can participate in the program. Insurance is not a requirement for being seen through the program.
How much does a telehealth visit cost?
There is no cost for the video visit for students enrolled in Mississippi public schools. Any costs for prescriptions and follow-up visits with primary care physicians or specialists, however, are the responsibility of the parent or guardian.
What if my student is not enrolled in a Mississippi public school?
The program is available to all children in Mississippi, but families outside the Mississippi public school system may be charged for the telehealth visit.
What information will be collected during the video visit? How will it be used?
Information from your child's medical record will be used for reports and to evaluate the program, but your child will not be identified with this information. The video visit is not recorded but some elements such as pictures may be taken. These materials will be maintained in a secure, HIPAA compliant database and will not be shared unless requested by a parent or guardian.
What is MyChart and why do I need it?
A MyChart account lets you manage health care for yourself and family members through an app and webpage. MyChart is not currently required for a summer telehealth visit, but you will need a MyChart account and proxy access to see your student’s after-visit summary of the visit or view test results. Sign up for MyChart.
What is Proxy Access?
MyChart proxy access allows you to access the medical records of your family members and others you care for, with their permission. You must be at least 18 years old to have proxy access to another person's medical record.
How can I get proxy access?
Parents or legally designated representatives of the patient must request proxy access to a minor’s MyChart account by calling (601) 815-2020 during normal business hours.
Anything else I need to know?
You and your student have the right to ask the health care provider to discontinue the video visit at any time.
