Business Training Opportunities
Millsaps Business Advantage Program
Knowledge of basic business principles is increasingly critical for success in many different career options, including those in academia and industry.
We have an opportunity for postdoctoral fellows at UMMC to receive formal training in basic business principles via the Millsaps College Business Advantage Program for Professionals. The Business Advantage Program for Professionals is a certificate course taught by nationally recognized Millsaps College MBA program professors and designed to give working professionals an exciting and comprehensive exposure to the most essential business topics. Participants will explore key topics in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, supply chain management and strategy.
Since Fall 2014, each year-two postdoctoral fellows received support from the Office of Postdoctoral Studies and the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences together with Millsaps College, to attend the Millsaps Business Advantage program. Read how they describe their experiences.
Attendance
The course is designed for individuals with no prior educational training in business.
Time commitment
Evening classes meet from 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Also, there are three Saturday morning classes listed in the schedule. The first of these Saturday morning classes covers meeting facilitation. The other two Saturday morning classes will only meet if there is a need to have a make-up session due to illness of a professor. The tentative syllabus is attached.
Costs
The UMMC School for Graduate Studies in Health Sciences will provide funds to cover the fees for the program. Each participant will be responsible for the cost of books and course materials for the semester. You can learn more about the program on the Millsaps website.
Application
If you are interested in being considered for participation in this program, complete and submit the following:
- A statement (2 pages maximum) stating why you are interested in this course and how your participation will benefit your training and future career opportunities.
- An updated CV
- A recommendation letter from your research mentor.
Eligibility
Postdoctoral fellows or instructors within 5 years after obtaining PhD are eligible to apply for this opportunity.
Selection process
Up to three postdoctoral fellows will be selected to attend the course. Review of the application materials will be conducted by a review committee within the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences. Selected candidates will be asked to complete an online application with Millsaps.
Attendance is mandatory. Participants who miss more than 3 classes in any one area of study or who miss 5 or more classes total will not be eligible to receive the BAP certificate and will be asked to reimburse the School for Graduate Studies in Health Sciences for the fees. If a participant does accumulate excess absences, he or she may appeal to the Business Advantage Program Committee in writing with a persuasive and reasoned argument as to why he or she should be allowed to continue with the coursework.
This is a unique opportunity for those interested in advancing their training and to improve their skill set. We hope you will consider pursuing this outstanding opportunity.
