Main ContentAbout the School of Nursing
In 1948, the Department of Nursing first opened its doors on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, and ten years later, it achieved school status. The School of Nursing moved to the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus in Jackson in 1956 and began offering Mississippi's first baccalaureate nursing program.
As the state's flagship nursing school, the nationally ranked School of Nursing now offers a full spectrum of nursing programs, including bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs. With a reputation for offering rigorous graduate and undergraduate nursing education, the University of Mississippi School of Nursing provides its students with hands-on, multidisciplinary clinical training on the state's only academic health science campus, but also classroom instruction that effectively prepares them for successful careers as RNs in a variety of health care settings.
Additionally, the School of Nursing is affiliated with more than 200 hospitals, community health centers, health departments, mental-health facilities, private-practice clinics, community clinics and schools, thus offering students extensive opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration in clinical practice and research. All educational programs offered at the University of Mississippi School of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
The School of Nursing hosts one of the country's only research departments located within a state-supported nursing school. Its faculty and students are provided the opportunity and support necessary to develop and implement a professional research and scholarship trajectory. Likewise, the School of Nursing includes numerous faculty practice sites. These sites include nurse practitioner-managed school-based clinics in Jackson and the Mississippi Delta, as well as a mobile clinic and an urban, full-service, primary-care clinic.
