Ben grew up in Mississippi. After graduating from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, in 2006 he worked as a raft guide, high school teacher, bookstore manager, backpacking instructor, and Methodist pastor before matriculating into medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He holds a Master of Divinity from Duke University's School of Divinity and still enjoys the occasional opportunity to preach or speak.

What I appreciate most about the neurosurgery program at UMC is the resident camaraderie. Our residents take very seriously their role in developing the next person in line. It's a value they learn from our faculty. Every time I walk in the hospital, I know I'll be both supported and stretched.
And Mississippi is an excellent place to learn. Being at the only Level 1 trauma center in the state and the only hospital with a neurosurgery residency, we see a broad range of disease with the most extensive, challenging presentations and comorbidities. It prepares our residents for matching into competitive fellowships.
