About Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with injury, disease or disorders of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and extra-cranial cerebrovascular systems. Neurosurgical care includes both adult and pediatric patients.

Neurosurgeons are highly trained neurosurgical specialists who can help patients suffering from back and neck disorders, blood vessel abnormalities (such as stroke), brain aneurysms, tumors, head and spinal cord injuries, as well as a host of other neurological disorders and injuries.

Neurosurgeons are assisted by a caring staff of specialty nurses and nurse practitioners, each having special interest and experience in the health care needs of their patients.

The UMMC difference

At UMMC, we have the ability to care for the whole-person by providing an integrated patient-centered approach to neurosurgery. Not only will you have access to a top neurosurgeon, you will also have a team of doctors and nurses who can look at your distinct medical needs to provide you the best care possible.

In addition, UMMC has the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Mississippi providing comprehensive, leading-edge medical and surgical management for patients with traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries and/or peripheral nerve trauma. The continuum of care also includes a specialized intensive care unit, physical medicine and rehabilitation.
