If You Suspect You Have Fallen Victim to a Phishing Attempt

The Office of Information and Security recommends the following steps to protect yourself:

  1. Change any passwords associated with the involved account(s) immediately. This includes your email accounts and any financial accounts.
  2. Monitor your accounts and credit report for any suspicious activity.
  3. Consider placing a fraud alert or freeze on your credit report with one of the three major credit bureaus. To initiate a credit freeze, you can contact the credit bureaus through the following phone numbers or websites:
  4. Be cautious of any further communication from the scammer and avoid responding to any additional requests for information.
  5. We also recommend that you report the fraud to the following organizations:
    • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 1-877-FTC-HELP, 1-877-ID-THEFT, or online at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/. This will enable the FTC to investigate the scam and take appropriate action against the scammer.
    • The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at https://www.ic3.gov/. This will enable the FBI to investigate the scam and take appropriate action against the scammer.
    • The International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) at https://www.econsumer.gov/. This will enable international law enforcement agencies to investigate the scam and take appropriate action against the scammer.

Please note that if there are any organizational implications to UMMC, the Office of Information Security and Privacy will also investigate the incident and we may need to take additional steps to protect our systems and data.
