Louise Chambliss

The Louise B. Chambliss Scholarship Fund honors a pioneer in the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) School of Nursing. Chambliss was the first African American to graduate from the school in 1966, and she went on to become the first African American faculty member of the school. Chambliss passed away Sept. 25, 2018.

When contributions reach $25,000, the fund will be re-designated as “The Louise B. Chambliss Scholarship Endowment”. The proceeds will be used to support undergraduate or graduate nursing students from ethnic minority backgrounds, to include African Americans.

Chambliss is known for her genuine compassion for others, her dedication to nursing education and the lasting impression of professionalism she left with her students.

A native of Braxton, Miss., she received her diploma from the Gilfoy School of Nursing in 1958, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1966, Bachelor of Science in Education from Jackson State University in 1969, and Masters of Nursing from the University of California in 1972.

In 1982, Louise received the Distinguished Achievement Award for Black Alumni from the University of Mississippi. She was licensed as a registered nurse in both California and Mississippi and held professional memberships in the American Nurses’ Association, National League for Nurses and the American Red Cross. Mrs. Chambliss was a member of Alpha Tau Delta, a national fraternity for professional nurses and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

In honor of her life as a nurse educator, your tax-deductible contributions can be made to her fund online at umc.edu/SON-give.

COVID-19 Update for the UMMC School of Nursing

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives in ways we could not have imagined. In times of uncertainty, community support is vitally important. We are so proud of the way many of you have helped by donating personal protective equipment for our frontline health care workers or supported other needs. THANK YOU!

As the UMMC School of Nursing grapples with this new normal, we must address financial concerns that have arisen due to the pandemic. We are asking for your help. Designating a gift today to our Area of Greatest Need Fund will support urgent and emerging needs identified by the school’s leadership team.

Even through the distance that keeps us safe, your relationship with your school is a bond that will endure a lifetime. Together, we will get through this historic health crisis and emerge stronger and better. Your philanthropic support will make a tremendous difference as we weather this challenge as a school family.
