Student Progression
The SOM Office of Medical Education oversees the progression and promotion of students in the School of Medicine. The vice dean for medical education serves as chair of the Medical Student Promotions Committee, which is comprised of selected SOM faculty. The committee is familiar with the standards for assessment, advancement, and graduation, and is responsible for matters concerning promotion and academic status, as well as making recommendations for graduation of senior medical students. The reports and recommendations of the Promotions Committee are presented to the SOM Executive Faculty Committee for approval and recommendation to the dean.
All standards and procedures for the assessment, advancement, and graduation of medical students are available in the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) Bulletin and in the SOM Student Handbook. Students are notified in a timely manner of adverse academic decisions such as requirements for remedial work, conditions for withdrawal, or dismissal.
