Addiction Research

Laying the foundation for CIDA is more than 20 years’ worth of basic, preclinical, and clinical research on addiction conducted at UMMC. Our addiction research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health since the early 1990’s, with important programs in opioid, stimulant, alcohol, and sedative-anxiolytic abuse, as well as research on co-occurrence of addiction with other mental disorders.

Preclinical research in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior alone is supported currently by a number of NIH research grants. These are in addition to large service-supporting grants from SAMHSA and the Department of Justice.
