A certified nurse-midwife, or CNM, is an advanced practice nurse who has completed a graduate level midwifery program and passed a national board exam administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board. CNM’s are independent practitioners who are regulated by the Board of Nursing.

Our nurse-midwives collaborate closely with physicians, nurses and other specialists to ensure safe, personalized care---whether you are planning for pregnancy, seeking routine women’s health care, or navigating menopause.

Care during pregnancy and birth

UMMC nurse-midwives support you through every step of your pregnancy journey. They focus on your preferences, comfort and safety. Your nurse-midwife will:

• Provide routine prenatal care and education
• Order labs, ultrasounds and other necessary tests
• Manage labor, birth and labor discomforts for both unmedicated and medicated birth
• Support your individual birthing plans
• Recognize when additional support is needed and coordinate care

At every stage of life

UMMC nurse-midwives have prescription privileges and provide:

• Gynecologic exams
• Contraceptive services such as IUD and NEXPLANON^® insertions
• Well woman exams
• Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
• Pap smears/cervical cancer screening
• Diagnosis and treatment of common gynecologic complaints such as bladder and vaginal infections
• Preconception counseling
• Perimenopause and menopause care
