Main ContentSelf-help measures for mild GERD symptoms
While you are waiting for your appointment at the Esophageal Health and Reflux Center, we recommend the following self-help measures to relieve mild symptoms:
- Over-the-counter medications such as antacids (like TUMS©), H2 blockers (such as Pepcid©, Zantac©, many others), or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs – such as Nexium© or Prilosec©) may be helpful, taken as directed. Try antacids first, then H2 blockers, then PPIs.
- Pay attention to what and how much you eat. Certain foods can trigger heartburn, so it may be helpful to keep a food journal so you can identify what foods cause trouble. Overeating and eating too quickly put pressure on the valve that separates your stomach and esophagus, so eat smaller portions and take your time. You can also wear loose clothing to avoid extra pressure on your stomach.
- It may help to elevate your head at night to help with sleeping.
- Smoking can also make symptoms worse, so avoid tobacco usage. If you would like to quit and want help, contact the ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Education and Research.
