Children's Radiology and Imaging
Main ContentWhat to Expect for Your Child's MRI at Children’s of Mississippi
What is a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)?
An MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the inside of the body, helping health care professionals diagnose and evaluate various conditions.
How you can help your child cope during their MRI?
- Be honest and explain to your child what will happen using simple terms like "we will be going to the hospital to take pictures of your body. This is called having an MRI."
- Watch the MRI preparation video together. This allows your child to become familiar with the sights and sounds of the MRI prior to their appointment.
- Allow time for questions and continue to give simple explanations such as "just like taking a picture at home with a camera, the MRI won't touch you and you won't feel the camera take your picture."
- Have your child practice holding still at home and explain that even small wiggles can make their picture blurry.
- Use praise and encouraging words for your child's efforts.
- Remind your child that they will be able to pick a movie or TV show to watch during their MRI to help them feel more comfortable.
- Allow your child to bring a non-metal comfort item, such as a blanket or stuffed animal to have during their scan.
