Children's Genetics Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why was my child referred to see genetics?
Your child may be referred to genetics because their pediatrician might be concerned about an underlying genetic cause for their symptoms or features. Some reasons for a referral are developmental delay, abnormal genetic test results, or a strong family history of a disease.
What should I expect at an initial visit with genetics?
An initial visit with Children's of MS Genetics will be with either a geneticist or nurse practitioner. During this, you can expect to discuss personal and family medical history. The visit may also include an examination of the patient's physical features and a discussion of genetic testing if the provider thinks it may be informative for your child's health.
I am seeing a genetic counselor. What does this type of visit look like?
Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with specialized training in medical genetics and counseling. They are equipped to help patients and families understand genetic test results and their implications for medical management. Additionally, they also provide support to address emotions related to health, such as feelings of uncertainty, guilt, or grief.
What can I do to prepare for my visit with genetics?
Review your family history, making note of any health conditions, rare diagnoses, multiple pregnancy losses, cancers, birth defects, developmental delays, or learning/intellectual challenges present in your family members.
If you or a family member have seen an outside genetic specialist, please notify our office before your visit or bring any records or genetic testing results if available.
Think about any questions you may have about genetics or how it may affect your child's health.
How can I request a copy of my/my child's records or genetic test report?
