M2 Year
M2/M4 Teaching Tract
In late spring of the first year, students will have the opportunity to sign up as a mentee for this M4 elective. M4s will have the responsibility of teaching history and physical examination skills and giving feedback to assigned sophomore students. As an M2, this is a great opportunity to meet upper-level medical students and receive exposure to clinical medicine.
USMLE Step 1 Exam
Step 1 is the first standardized exam that is completed on the path to licensure for the practice of unsupervised medicine. An important part of the M2 year is devoted to studying for this exam alongside classes. Classes typically end in April of the second year to allow dedicated study time for the rest of spring, with students usually taking the exam in May.
A new program, “Testing Wisely,” has been created at the UMMC SOM to better prepare medical students for Step 1 (and Step 2 CK) and seeks to implement better test-taking strategies throughout the M1-M3 years.
