- Acceptable Courses
- Course credits are only acceptable from accredited U.S. colleges and universities.
- Online biology, chemistry, physics, and math courses are discouraged, and online required courses are not accepted. However, due to social distancing measuring during the COVID-19 pandemic, online courses taken during the Spring of 2020 through the summer of 2021 will be accepted.
- Online degree programs will not be accepted.
- All required courses must have a college grade; therefore, Advanced Placement (AP) credit cannot meet these requirements and are not acceptable.
- Required courses must be completed within the previous 10 years to be acceptable. Courses taken 10+ years prior to applying are not acceptable and must be repeated.
- Credit Hours
- Transcripts must show credit for at least three (3) years of college work totaling >90 acceptable semester hours (excluding unacceptable courses as described above). These 90 hours should consist of courses required for entrance to UMMC’s School of Medicine plus other courses required by the candidate’s undergraduate institution for a baccalaureate degree. For those candidates applying with the minimum 90 acceptable semester hours, a maximum of 65 semester hours from an accredited community college may be applied.
- Applicants are encouraged to take at least 32 semester hours of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Match course work to demonstrate they are capable of sustaining the rigors of an advanced learning environment.
- Applicants should be on track to completing all requirements for their baccalaureate degree prior to potential matriculation into medical school.
- College graduates may complete additional post-baccalaureate coursework at any accredited US college or university to satisfy their prerequisites.
- Required Courses
- Required core Science courses as well as advanced Science and Math courses must be taken from either Science or Math departments.
- UMMC Student Records and Registrar’s Office will examine the course number of Science and Math courses for a relevant prefix (eg BIOL, CHEM, PHYS, MATH, BISC) to determine if those courses will be acceptable as prerequisites.
- Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math courses with a related name but with a course number that contains another prefix (including but not limited to BESS, CLS, COMP, ENGL, HEAL, MEDC, NPSC, PHARM, PHCL) are not acceptable prerequisite courses.
- Most candidates use End-Point Courses to fulfill their prerequisites (select for a list).
