The Long Coat Ceremony

With the end of the academic year, the UMMC School of Medicine becomes charged with anticipation, marking both the culmination of medical school for its students and the initiation of their journey into the next phase of physician training. A cherished tradition now occurs on the Thursday evening preceding the official commencement ceremony—the UMMC School of Medicine Long Coat Ceremony.
Held at Thalia Mara Hall on Thursday, May 23, this event served as a celebration for the graduating medical students and their families, highlighted by a keynote address delivered this year by Dr. Demondes Haynes, Associate Dean for Admissions. Dr. Haynes was introduced by Class VP Erin Sears, who highlighted his selection by the class to deliver the speech, noting the significance of the individual who entrusted them with their journey to becoming doctors being the one to deliver their final medical school lecture.
Central to the ceremony is the bestowal of long coats upon the students—a symbolic shift from student to physician, indicating a commitment to uphold professionalism, compassion, and the highest standards of patient care. A notable tradition initiated in 2022 allows students to choose who assists them in donning their white coats, whether it be a family member, a respected physician mentor, or one of the deans of the School of Medicine.
The evening then culminated with all physicians in attendance, including those poised to receive their degrees the following day, reciting the Hippocratic Oath. Beyond its role as a celebration and a significant milestone for the students, the ceremony serves as a poignant reminder of the ethical duties and profound responsibilities inherent in the medical profession.
