About Geriatrics

Geriatrics is a branch of medicine that focuses on meeting the unique health needs of older adults. As people age, they face a more complex set of health challenges that may include disease, disability, and physical, mental, and emotional issues. Geriatricians are trained to help older adults maintain their health and quality of life.

The UMMC difference

As our population ages, the importance of geriatric medicine has taken on new significance. The University of Mississippi Medical Center shares that interest by providing internal medicine physicians who specialize in caring for older adults.

  • Our geriatric care team provides evaluations and manages the health care needs of patients age 65 and older.
  • We offer a multidisciplinary approach to assessment and treatment, including medical, psychiatric, and neurologic evaluations and care.
  • Common reasons for referral include memory impairment, functional impairment, and comprehensive geriatric assessment of patients with multiple medical problems and/or psychosocial problems.
  • We work closely with The MIND Center at UMMC to care for patients with memory problems.
