DAISY Award - Hospital (for nurses only)

The DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses honoring nurses internationally in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that celebrates the extraordinary compassion nurses provide their patients and families every day. Any UMMC nurse, whose care exhibits outstanding kindness, may be nominated by anyone who experiences or observes their exceptional level of care. This includes patients, their family members, co-workers, physicians and staff.

Examples of DAISY Award criteria include:

  • Exhibiting extraordinary compassion and kindness to patients and their families every day as an essential part of the healing process.
  • Exemplifying UMMC values: quality, teamwork, innovation, diversity and integrity.
  • Communicating in a calm, focused and caring way when patients and families may be experiencing the most difficult situation of their lives.
  • Going above and beyond what is expected of nurses – even volunteering personal time and resources to assist patient’s children, indigent patients and families who are desperate.

Winners will receive a certificate held in a handsome portfolio, proclaiming the recipient an "Extraordinary Nurse"; a DAISY Award pin; and a unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled "A Healer's Touch".
