Anxiety, grief, self-doubt and just everyday homesickness – these are some of the concerns students at any institution may face. For five years now, students in the seven Medical Center schools have been encouraged to bring their worries to the staff of the Student Counseling and Wellness Center. Today, the center has made it easier than ever for them to tap into the support they seek.

Precision medicine, an approach that uses targeted therapy to treat individual patients, includes a field called pharmacogenomics. Looking at a patient’s DNA to see how it affects the way they respond to drugs, pharmacogenomics is now also being used at UMMC in the treatment of psychiatric conditions.

At sixteen letters, it’s a long term with long-term implications: pharmacogenomics. At the Medical Center, it has extended its reach to the practice of psychiatry, enabling prescribers to better assign medications to patients, side-stepping side effects and expanding the potential for more personalized care.
