Staff Spotlight: Brent Shows
I started at UMMC in the Physical Facilities department in 1990. I worked there until 2002, and that’s when I found the Department of Physiology. I had always liked building and working with computers so I started to obtain computer and network certifications that included Microsoft, Cisco, Net+, and a few more. One night, in 2002, I got a phone call from Dr. Hester. He had reviewed my application and asked if I could come in for an interview. I had applied for the job of “Departmental Lan Administrator” a few weeks back. It didn’t take long after talking to him and Dr. Hall that I was part of the department of Physiology. It is the best department to work in. The people are great to work with and I couldn’t have asked for a better place or group of people. When I started in the department I told Dr. Hester that I hoped to retire in the department and years later I did. I came back on a part time basis in 2022.
The department has changed a lot since I started, but that’s to be expected. I heard Dr. Hall once say if you don’t adapt you get left behind. It has always been a pleasure seeing and talking to the front office women. They know all the things going on it’s always so interesting.
In the last 20 plus years, in the department, I have gotten married to Kim (2006). She nor I had been married. We don’t have kids but we have nieces and nephews and a dog and cats. I now play golf every chance I get and one day I hope to break 90. I have found that I’m diabetic type2 and have had a pacemaker implanted during those department years.
