2023 Peds PReCEP Program

Pediatric Research and Clinical Education Program

2023 Peds PReCEP Program

PEDIATRICS. The Department of Pediatrics sponsors 10 medical students in the summer between their M1 and M2 years to participate in research and gain exposure to clinical aspects of the practice of Pediatric medicine. The program is competitive, so interested students should apply early. Traditionally, this program has combined research or quality improvement endeavors with an introduction to clinical care, with a major goal of introducing medical students to the world of Pediatrics as a future career path.  There is wide flexibility built into the program to make it a worthwhile experience for any medical student wishing to learn about Pediatrics. Students can request which pediatric area to work in and are welcome to approach potential mentors before applying, though not required.  Students will be matched with a mentor after acceptance to the program based on student area of interest and mentor availability. There are a variety of mentors available in both general Pediatrics and Pediatric subspecialty areas.  At the end of the summer, each student will present their research to their peers and mentors. Many of the students have had their research published and/or presented abstracts at scientific meetings.

The program is under the direction of David Gilliam, MD. The program is 8 weeks long and students will work an estimated 40-hour week. The dates for 2023 are Tuesday, May 30 - Friday, July 21. Selected students will be contacted by early April. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

You may contact Alyssa McCarron or Dr. David Gilliam with any questions.
