Main ContentMessage from the Chief Residents
Welcome to the University of Mississippi Medical Center Pediatrics Residency Program! We are the Chief Residents for the 2024-2025 academic year and are thrilled that you are exploring our program. Each of us brings a unique perspective to our roles as Chief Residents. Nathan was raised in Monroe, Washington and completed his combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at UMMC. Shanu attended medical school at UMMC and then trained in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Greenville, South Carolina. Mary Morgan was born and raised here in Mississippi, where she completed undergraduate, medical school, and Pediatrics residency. Serving the children of Mississippi is a privilege we all deeply value. As the state's only Children’s hospital, we play a crucial role as a safety net for the sickest patients in Mississippi and neighboring areas. Our state-of-the-art Level 1 trauma center and Level 4 NICU allow unparalleled exposure to complex pathology and illnesses. Both the quality of training and the clinical experience that we received prepared us to graduate fully prepared for independent practice.
We three are certainly thankful for the residency experience and the work family that we have through UMMC. Ask any of our residents, and they will tell you that the people of UMMC are what drew them in and have kept them going strong. Not only our residents, but also our leadership creates the inviting, family atmosphere that makes our program so special. We can continue confidently into our career paths thanks to the support and mentorship we have had along the way. They call Jackson "The City with Soul" – and that is evident from our hospital, our people, our restaurants, our events, and our service to each other. The people of Jackson care deeply for our city, our state, and our people.
Our residency program is an extension of that sentiment, and we are excited that you are considering our program for your training in Pediatrics. Whether you join us from within UMMC or bring your experiences from elsewhere, we look forward to welcoming you to our team. We are eager to meet you and wish you success in your pursuit of a fulfilling career in pediatrics.
