Irradiation of all blood products transfused into such patients has been shown to be effective in preventing this complication and is recommended. Recent consensus suggests that cellular blood components should be irradiated prior to transfusion in the following clinical situations: (1) donor is a family member (2) patients with leukemia or lymphoma undergoing treatment (3) patients undergoing marrow transplantation (4) patients with overt, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, as well as congenital immunodeficiency conditions, such as Wiskott Aldrich syndrome. (5) intrauterine transfusion
Indications for Use: Prevention of Graft-vs-Host Disease in immuno compromised patients.
