Interview Information

November December

Are you currently accepting applications or interviewing for 2019 academic year?
We have concluded our interviews for the 2019 season. We are no longer accepting applications or will conduct any additional interview days.

Where should I stay while in Jackson?
Lodging is provided for out-of-town applicants the night prior to the interview at the Hilton Garden Inn Jackson Downtown. Any further nights can be booked at interviewee's own expense by contacting the Hilton Garden Inn Jackson Downtown at (601) 353-5464.

How is the weather in Mississippi during interview season?
November is typically cool in the mornings and mild in the afternoons; December is typically cool all day, and January is typically cold all day. A light jacket would be appropriate in December and a heavy jacket in January. Mississippi weather is unpredictable, so make sure to check the weather and bring a small umbrella just in case.

How long is the interview day?
The interview day starts at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until around 2 p.m.

When do I check out of the hotel? Do I have a place to store my luggage?
Your interview will not end prior to check-out time at the hotel. Therefore, you will need to check out that morning prior to leaving the hotel. You will need to bring your luggage with you to the interview for it to be stored in the office. Transportation will be provided from the institution to the airport if needed.

Will I need to drive myself to the interview? If so, where should I park?
If you are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Jackson, transportation will be provided by the residency program to the hospital and someone will drop you off at the airport. If you drive your own vehicle to the interview, park in Garage A. Bring your parking ticket with you for validation at the end of the day. Directions to Garage A: From North State Street, turn onto the UMMC campus at the stoplight (across from Backyard Burger); Garage A is on the left. Please bring in your parking ticket.

What is the typical itinerary for an interview day?

  • 8-8:25 a.m. - Meeting with program director
  • 8:30-11 a.m. - Interviews

Where do I go in the morning?
A representative from Pathology will meet those arriving from the Hilton Inn Garden Downtown Jackson around 7:15 a.m. at the University Heart Circle behind Parking Garage A and walk you to the welcome breakfast. If you are driving yourself, it is encouraged that you also arrive at this time. We will meet for a short welcome in the conference room on the second floor in surgical pathology.

Should I eat breakfast before arriving?
A light breakfast of coffee and pastries will be provided the morning of your interview once you arrive to the department.

Will I know with whom I am interviewing? How many interviews will I have?
You will receive your itinerary by email a week in advance. Each applicant typically has around six 20-minute interviews with departmental faculty. Itinerary's are subject to change upon arrival.

Do I need to bring a copy of my CV/personal statement?
No. Your interviewers are provided copies of your application prior to your interview, so there is no need for you to bring this information with you to your interview.

Where do I send thank-you notes?
Thank-you notes are not required, but can be sent to the Pathology department and will then be distributed to the faculty. Enclose individual thank-you notes in a larger envelope addressed to Hollie Thomas, Department of Pathology, 2500 N. State St., Jackson, MS 39216.

What else do I need to know?
More information can be found on the other pages of the pathology residency website. For other questions, contact Hollie Thomas.
