Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a national mandate to eliminate all medical student away rotations except for students without a home program. Because of this, the UMMC Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Department will only be able to accept external students from such schools. UMMC is engaged in ongoing monitoring of virus activity in this area. Though you may be accepted for a rotation, it is possible, based on changes in disease prevalence, that we will have to cancel the rotation for the safety of all those involved. It is also possible that our institution will require you to complete a 2-week self-quarantine before you can begin clinical rotations here. We apologize for this, however our chief concern must be to ensure the health of our students, patients, and population.
Externships in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery are offered from July through January. This four-week clinical rotation is designed for students who are interested in pursuing graduate medical education in otolaryngology. Students work with our faculty in the clinical and didactic setting and actively participate in all aspects of patient care at the intern level. A 15-minute presentation to the department on a topic of his/her choice is required.
Interested students should apply through VSAS. Only senior medical students enrolled in good standing in an LCME- or American Osteopathic Association-accredited school, in the U.S. or Canada, will be offered a senior elective in this School of Medicine. For more information about the application process, contact:
After review of the application and verification of the applicant's credentials, the Registrar's Office will notify the otolaryngology education administrator for approval of the elective. Students should also send a copy of their USMLE Step 1 score to:
Availability of specific dates is determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
To comply with UMMC and state regulations, accepted visiting students must be fingerprinted on the first day of the rotation. Note: There is a $50 fee for this service.
As an added convenience, we are pleased to announce that students will be given the opportunity to interview with the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery during their rotation.
