Message from the Program Director
The University of Mississippi Medical Center OB-GYN residency is a fully accredited program approved for six categorical residents per year and one preliminary position. We are the only OB-GYN residency in the state. Additionally, UMMC is Mississippi's only tertiary care center, only Level I trauma center, and the only Level IV NICU and Level IV maternal care center (Regional Perinatal Health Care Center).
Our faculty includes subspecialists in all board-certified subspecialties: Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Urogynecology. Our specialist division, also called the "Women's Health" Division, is our largest group. We also have a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship, with a total of six fellows.
Beginning in July 2026, we are proud to introduce a Rural OB-GYN Residency Track in partnership with Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. This innovative track is designed to improve access to women's health care in rural and underserved communities across the state. The rural track resident will complete PGY-1 at UMMC, with the final rotation of that year at Memorial Hospital. PGY-2 and PGY-3 will be based at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, followed by a return to UMMC for the PGY-4 year.
Our didactic curriculum is extensive and includes sessions related to wellness, equity, and even the financial and legal aspects of medicine. We also have a robust simulation curriculum, which begins during our pre-residency intern bootcamp.
Given the high surgical volume and complexity of cases, our residents graduate with the skills to function as full-scope OB-GYNs. Additionally, we prepare interested residents for the fellowship of their choosing. Our research division supports every resident, ensuring each completes both a QI and a research project.
Thank you for your interest in our program. Please contact our education office if you have any further questions.
