Past Fellows and Alumni – Voices from the Program
Our graduates have gone on to rewarding careers across the country in academic medicine, clinical practice, public health, and leadership. Hear what some of our former fellows have to say about their experience training at UMMC.
Nicholas Chamberlain, MD
ID Fellow (2019–2021)
Current Role: Medical Director, AIDS Healthcare Foundation Peachtree Healthcare Center, Atlanta, GA
I was fortunate that the ID faculty at UMMC made a sincere and meaningful investment throughout my training (even prior to starting ID fellowship there) that demonstrated a commitment to my own personal and professional development. That unique combination of personal roots, meaningful clinical exposure, and committed faculty mentorship made the decision both clear and deeply rewarding.
One of the most unexpected highlights of my ID training arose from the COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from that once-in-a-lifetime experience, the mentorship from so many amazing ID faculty members, and the collegiality of UMMC as a whole made for a truly unforgettable ID fellowship.
Christian Weaver, MD
ID Fellow (2017–2019)
Current Role: Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA
I hadn't actually considered doing ID as a career until I rotated on the service with the amazing faculty. The scope of pathology was great to learn from, and the variety of clinical interests from varying faculty members made it the obvious choice for training.
Jeb Clark, MD
ID Fellow (2017–2019)
Current Role: Assistant Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases, Baylor Scott & White Campus, Temple, TX
As the only academic facility in the state, UMMC offered the best pathology to learn on as almost everything interesting in the state comes to UMMC. The people I had the opportunity to learn from were, without a doubt, some of the best physicians I have met.
Saira Butt, MD
ID Fellow (2009–2011)
Current Role: Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, ID Fellowship PD at IUSOM, section ID Chief, Eskenazi Hospital
I felt so privileged to work with so many great faculty during my time at UMMC. I enjoyed the shared learning with PharmDs. We saw everything — from bread-and-butter ID to rare cases like opportunistic infections and endemic fungi, and even Balamuthia infections in renal transplant patients.
The ID faculty and staff were warm and friendly, the Southern food was delicious, and the Ross Barnett Reservoir was my favorite spot to unwind.
Christina Muzny, MD, MSPH
ID Fellow (2006–2009)
Current Role: Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology, Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Alabama at Birmingham; Chair – UAB Institutional Review Board; Medical Director – UAB ID Vaginitis Clinic, UAB Sexual Health Research Clinic
I choose ID fellowship at UMMC given the close-knit community of ID faculty members and fellows, the great amount of pathology seen at UMMC hospital, the VA, and the Mississippi State Department of Health Crossroads (STI) clinic, the opportunities for traveling to the Amazon jungle to provide healthcare to indigent populations, and the leadership of the Division. Very fellow friendly environment.
