Program Update
In 2015, we transitioned from a four-year program to a three-year program, following the trend for EM programs around the country. In 2018, our first class of three-year EM residents and last class of four-year EM residents graduated side-by-side. In 2020, we expanded our class size to include 16 interns each year, which helped us adequately staff all areas of the renovated, expanded ED. By July 2022, we will have 48 EM residents!

Our trainees value the unique training that they receive at community hospitals, but establishing quality, consistent community rotations that do not require residents to relocate has been a challenge over the years. We're pleased that in 2020, our PGY-2 residents started rotating at King’s Daughters Hospital in Brookhaven. Dr. Stephen Brown (class of 2018) serves as the Medical Director and Resident Site Director for our residents. The trainees also get to work alongside Dr. Giles Langston (class of 2019).

UMMC entered into a business venture with Merit Madison in 2019, paving the way for our residents to begin rotating there as well, beginning in 2021. PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents currently work 12-hour shifts daily at Merit Madison, where Dr. Trey Nichols (class of 2013) serves as Medical Director and Dr. Josh Norman serves as Resident Site Director. The residents also work with Dr. Justin Daniels (class of 2014), Dr. Tim Flowers (class of 2009), Dr. Brandi Hyatt, and Dr. Gerald McLemore (class of 2015).
