The Cold-Stored Platelet Early Intervention in Hemorrhagic Shock study, or CriSP-HS, is studying whether giving cold-stored platelets early to patients who are losing a lot of blood will help stop the bleeding better than standard care. The study also aims to investigate how keeping platelets cold prolongs the shelf life from about 3-5 days to two weeks. This would allow the hospital to use the product longer and could allow more effective use in rural and even prehospital settings. Dr. Matt Kutcher, UMMC trauma surgeon, is the Principal Investigator, partnering with Dr. Joe Doherty, EM and critical care physician, as co-investigator. UMMC has enrolled 26 patients to date, more than any other participating center in the country.
